Google launches balloons to provide internet to remote locations

Search giant Google has launched giant balloons into the stratosphere with the goal of providing internet access to the entire planet. The translucent, jellyfish-shaped balloons were released from a frozen field in the heart of New Zealand's South Island. They hardened into shiny pumpkins as they rose into the blue skies above Lake Tekapo. It was the culmination of 18 months' work on what Google calls 'Project Loon'.Developed in the secretive X lab that came up with a driverless car and web-surfing eyeglasses, the flimsy helium-filled inflatables beam the Internet down to earth as they sail past on the wind. Still in their experimental stage, the balloons were the first of thousands that Google's leaders eventually hope to launch 12 miles into the stratosphere in order to bridge the gaping digital divide between the world's 4.8 billion unwired people and their 2.2 billion plugged-in counterparts.

Remembering June 12 and M.K.O Abiola

Exactly twenty years ago today on June 12, 1993, Nigerians from all parts of the country kept aside religious and ethnic differences and came out in their millions to vote for the now late Chief Moshood K. Abiola the then presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) into the office of president. He was victorious, defeating co-contestant in that election, Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). The result of that election was annulled by the regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida just before the then electoral agency had the chance to give final election results and declare Abiola duly elected as president. The vote count, at the time the poll was aborted, indicated victory for Abiola. The June 12 election since then became a marker in Nigeria’s electoral history as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria.

Five dead in Santa Monica shooting rampage

Police on Saturday were investigating what prompted a man dressed in black to embark on a string of shootings in the beach community of Santa Monica, killing four people before police gunned him down in a community college library.Five other people were wounded in the shooting rampage, which unfolded just a few miles from where President Barack Obama was speaking at a political fundraiser elsewhere in Santa Monica, west of Los Angeles. The bloodshed did not appear to be related to Obama's visit to Santa Monica and the Secret Service called it a "local police matter."The killing spree marked the latest in string of high-profile mass shootings over the past year, including a December attack in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school and a shooting last July at a suburban Denver movie theater that killed 12 people. - Reuters
